Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University have released more details about their plans to bring students and staff back to campus in August after the coronavirus forced the universities to shift to online instruction during their spring semesters.

One of the most significant measures is a change to NAU's calendar for the fall semester.

NAU is moving up its first day of school to Aug. 12. Classes will end before Thanksgiving.

"Our goal is to take advantage of a period of expected lower COVID-19 case rates, exceptional weather for encouraging outdoor activities, and lower rates of student travel prior to any potential resurgence of the virus," said NAU President Rita Cheng in a statement

Each classroom will have the capability to stream classes online, according to the statement. NAU also plans to decrease density in its residence halls with a mix of single and standard occupancy.

Meanwhile, ASU said in a Friday email to students that all employees and students will be required to wear face coverings while inside buildings. ASU staff will be required to take and report their temperature each work day.

Many classes will include a blend of in-person and remote instruction. Some labs, clinical experiences and fine arts courses that do not lend themselves to remote instruction will only be available through on-campus, in-person instruction, according to additional details posted on ASU's website

ASU is also making COVID-19 testing available for all students and employees.
