There are many films made about indigenous peoples, but few made by  them.

The short film “Fast Horse” won a directing award at the Sundance Film festival. It’s director, Alexandra Lazarowich, is a member of the Cree community in Canada.

Adam Piron is working to increase the number of indigenous filmmakers.

Piron is a Phoenix native and assistant curator for film at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He and several colleagues — including Lazarowich — created a nonprofit called COUSIN, a collaborative to help jumpstart indigenous filmmaking.

Piron joined The Show to talk about what makes indigenous filmmaking unique.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story has been modified to correct the name of the film and to clarify the director.
