A third family has welcomed a baby after the mother participated in the uterus transplant clinical trial at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas has announced the third baby born in connection with its uterus transplant clinical trial.

The baby was born from a womb provided by a healthy anonymous donor to a woman with absolute uterine factor infertility, a condition in which the uterus is absent or does not function.

Baylor's program delivered the first uterine transplant baby in the U.S. in December 2017.

Earlier, beginning in September 2014, eight such births occurred at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Baylor team has performed 20 uterine transplants, which involve difficult surgeries, in-vitro fertilization and rounds of antirejection drugs before, during and after pregnancy.

The organs are intended to last long enough for one or two births before being removed.
