Gila River Internment Camp memorial to Japanese American veterans
At one point during World War II more than 13,000 Japanese American people were incarcerated about an hour south of Phoenix. The Gila River Indian Community tightly controls access to the site, so one of the few opportunities for non-tribal members to visit is an annual cleanup that has become a pilgrimage for descendants of internees.

The Phoenix City Council is scheduled this week to vote on a plan to spend $150 million to update Talking Stick Resort Arena, which is the home of the Phoenix Suns. The city’s share of the money would come from money raised on items like rental cars and hotel rooms. The team would also pay for some of the upgrades.
