Main trail to Rainbow Bridge.

Officials will temporarily close a natural sandstone arch near the Arizona-Utah border that draws 90,000 visitors a year.

Last year, heavy rains washed out a trail that leads to Rainbow Bridge National Monument from Lake Powell. Temporary fixes have kept the monument open, but officials say the trail needs to be built up and reinforced. So, they’ve scheduled to close it from Jan. 5 until Feb. 15.

Most people visit the monument by boat across Lake Powell. Others hike up to 18 miles from Navajo Mountain. Hikers will be able to access the viewing area but not the remaining trail leading to Lake Powell. The monument is located in far southern Utah in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, which stretches into northern Arizona.
