Local alternative rock band Fairy Bones doesn’t pull any punches. Upbeat and rebellious, the group is full steam ahead with a brand new album "0% Fun." A mix of art rock, theatrical performance, and pop punk, the record showcases the band’s ability to write catchy ear-worms driven by the unapologetic spirit and vocals of Chelsey Louise.

The Show's Lauren Gilger spoke with her about the new record, the power of performance, and music as a companion for anxiety.

INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS

On the power of music as a medium:
"Singing and songs are like a special form of communication that you can't replicate that in any other way. Like I love poetry, and I read a lot of books, and I love films — but they're all different forms of communication. And I think that singing is really, really special and super different. It's sort of like writing a journal entry and then screaming it at people."

On coping with anxiety through music:
"I kind of hope this album…can be your companion in an anxiety time or a depression time because there's a lot of anxiety and depression in it. So I don't want you to be more depressed, but I just want it to be like your depression companion kind of thing."

On 2017 and 0% Fun:
"2017 was 100 percent “0% fun,” and it was just sort of about that year of just horrible things happening — not only to us or me, but the world at large. We wanted it to be like dancing in Hell. Like it's OK to be sad, but don't let it be the only thing you are."

On the high of connecting with an audience (after album release show):
"When we got off stage I said to the band, “If nothing happens after this — like if we all hate each other tomorrow — we can say that we did the thing. We did the thing that people dream about doing. We wrote the album. People know the songs. We had people come to a release show, and we did it. So if we all die tomorrow, this was a big accomplishment and I could go happy."
