Maricopa Animal Control Warns Pet Owners To Be Extra Careful Around New Year's Eve

If you got a puppy for Christmas, a county agency is asking you take extra care around the holidays when fireworks can spook animals.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) says they haven’t seen an influx of animals this holiday season, though the shelters are still busy.

“Most recently we’ve had a lot of situations where we’ve been able to return animals to their owners that have ended up in the shelters either as lost or strays. So we’re actually in really good shape right now,” said MCACC spokesman Jose Santiago.

Santiago said an ASPCA study shows most pets actually end up staying in the home if given as gifts during the holidays.

But New Year's Eve is when the shelters see kennels filling.

“It’s really important that if they do end up lost, you go around and search the different shelters in the area as well as put your dog’s picture up on social media," said Santiago.

Santiago said micro-chipping is the best way to get reunited with a lost pet.
