A Phoenix-based nonprofit will soon be permanently barred from filing disability lawsuits against Arizona businesses. The settlement comes after a judge dismissed more than 1,000 suits filed by the group Advocates for Individuals with Disabilities (AID).

As part of a settlement, AID will be unable to file lawsuits alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The group will also have to pay $25,000 to the Arizona Attorney General’s office. That money will be used to create a fund to which businesses can apply to help pay for parking lot compliance measures.

Last year, AID filed more than 1,700 lawsuits alleging that parking lots for various Valley businesses were not ADA compliant. Many of the issues were relatively minor and could be easily fixed, including the height of signs.

KJZZ reached out to AID for comment, but the organization’s phone number was disconnected.
