Visitors to the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park may hike about 7 miles round trip to the spot where 19 elite firefighters died in 2013. The mens’ families had a hand in designing this memorial and wanted it to remain rustic.

Last year, Arizona’s newest state park opened honoring the 19 wildland firefighters who died in the Yarnell Hill Fire. Now, for a limited time, a new shuttle service connects visitors to the park from the tiny town of Yarnell.

The shuttle takes people to and from the First Assembly of God Church in the center of Yarnell to the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park.

Located in a remote area a few miles south of town, it’s Arizona’s first memorial state park. Its centerpiece is a trail that climbs through rugged terrain for 7 miles roundtrip, ending at the very spot where the firefighters died in 2013.

Along the path, 19 plaques tell the story of each fallen hotshot.

The shuttle to the park is expected to run every half hour from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through the end of October.
