Falcon Field is located on McKellips Road off of Greenfield Road in north Mesa.

Mesa’s Falcon Field was built in 1941 to support pilot training in World War II.

Now the city is looking to the airport’s future.

“One of our big goals at this point in addition to providing a safe and efficient runway taxiway system is to attract additional aeronautical businesses to the airport,” said Falcon Field Airport Director Corinne Nystrom.

The Mesa City Council will consider three proposals related to Falcon Field at its Monday meeting:

• A grant agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration for a new Airport Master Plan. The total cost is $571,620. The FAA would pay 91 percent and Mesa plans to seek a grant from the Arizona Department of Transportation and use the Falcon Field Airport Enterprise Fund to pay for the rest.
• A similar grant agreement, but to pay for design and construction of runway lighting and new signage at the airport. The total cost is estimated at $2,736,600. The FAA would pick up 91 percent  with Mesa again seeking additional money from ADOT and the Falcon Field Airport Enterprise Fund to pay the difference. Nystrom estimates the lighting system in need of replacement is about 30 years old.
• A lease agreement that would allow the FAA to install an antenna and use space for storage at the airport. The FAA plans to install a weather station to monitor temperature, precipitation, wind and pressure, and this is an initial step in that process.
