We’ve all heard stories about drug violence in Mexico, stories of beheadings and cartel kingpins and corrupt police officers. But what is it like to actually live in a town that’s been taken over by the drug cartels?

A new investigation from ProPublica tells the inside story of a cartel’s deadly massacre on a Texas border town, and the U.S. drug operation that sparked it.

i spoke with the reporter behind this story, Pulitzer Prize winner Ginger Thompson. We talked about how she uncovered this leaked U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration operation, and how she turned this story into an oral history of the town of Allende.
