The Maricopa County Community College district adopted a preliminary budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year Tuesday night. The $1.4 billion proposal is $59.4 million less than last year.

The move passed on a 5-2 vote. That means details of the proposed budget will soon be published in various news outlets in the county.

District board member Jean McGrath cast one of the no votes. She said she believes Mesa Community College’s Red Mountain campus, which reportedly costs $7 million a year to operate, should be shut down based on student enrollment and other factors.

Adopting the preliminary budget is one of the board’s last steps before holding a final vote on May 23.
