Arizona Science and Engineering Fair will gather science fair winners statewide.

Next week, the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF) will gather science fair winners statewide to compete for thousands of dollars in prizes and scholarships — if it can find enough judges.

Judging 1,100 student projects takes an army of volunteers. And when topics range from neuroscience to energy, it helps if judges can tell a brain cell from a fuel cell.

So AzSEF judges need two years of college, a college degree, or, ideally, an advanced degree and science experience. Because, as judging chair Julie Euber says, AzSEF is about more than accolades: It’s about students engaging with experts.

“You actually get to talk to them about their work. So, you do a nice quick interview with them right there, talk to them about their science, see what really drove them to pursue this topic.”

Judging will take place April 12 at Phoenix Convention Center, and — for those who hunger for more than knowledge — meals are provided.

To apply, visit the AzSEF website.
