Aftin's owner says underneath the fany hairdo is a dog that loves to snooze on the couch, rip up toys and fetch.

Chiseled cheekbones and a sky-high hairdo brought a Chandler poodle within a nose of winning the top prize at this week’s Westminster Dog Show in New York.

Poodle Aftin and her handler and owner Daniel Chavez took home the top prize for the non-sporting group and was a finalist for best in show at Westminster.

Although Aftin demurred when asked about her success, offering just a few snuffles to the microphone, Chavez spoke for her. 

“She loves it, she loves the attention,” Chavez said as Aftin jumped at the lap of her KJZZ interviewer. “When she gets in front of the crowd and she head the cheering, that really turns her on.”

It took upwards of five hours to achieve the puffballs of Aftin’s poodle ‘do. Her owner and handler Daniel Chavez on the other hand is more low maintenance.

“I don’t spend nearly as much time, simply shower and putting on a suit,” said Chavez, who shows poodles full-time.

At 2-years-old, Aftin is retiring from the ring. Chavez said she has several other hobbies to keep her happy.

“Given the opportunity she loves to roll in the grass, roll in the mud, and with all this hair you can imagine what that looks like at the end of the day,” Chavez said.

So the first thing on the retirement agenda? A shorter haircut.
