A controversy at an East Valley high school has attracted the attention of several state lawmakers.

Last Friday, at Perry High School in the Chandler Unified School District, students wore “Make America Great Again” clothing and carried a Trump banner to school. The students say it was to celebrate the school’s “Party in the USA" theme day.

Later, when students gathered outside the school with their banner, a school resource officer asked the students to put it away and leave the property but, the school said, they refused. When the officer asked for names, one student refused.

A statement from the high school said this was the heart of the issue: non-compliance with a school officer — and that’s what resulted in a 10-day suspension for that student.

But some state lawmakers are angry.

They say the student’s punishment had nothing to do with defying rules and everything to do with their support for President Trump. State House Majority Leader Warren Petersen wrote a letter — signed by 26 other state Republicans — to Attorney General Mark Brnovich asking for an investigation into violations of student first amendment rights.
