John Bouma, a major figure in the Phoenix area's legal community, has passed away.

He was well known for, among other things, defending the state in one of the lawsuits filed after the passage of Senate Bill 1070, the immigration enforcement law.

Bouma died Tuesday night after being hit by a car while he was in the road — he was 82 years old.

To help remember him, The Show spoke with Joe Kanefield, a partner at Ballard Spahr. Kanefield was also general counsel to then-Gov. Jan Brewer.
