President Lyndon Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act, as part of the Civil Rights Act, in 1968. Among other things, it makes it illegal to refuse to sell or rent a home to someone based on race, religion, national origin or other similar factors.

Richard Rothstein argues the federal government was behind the segregation of American neighborhoods in the first place.

Rothstein is a policy analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, and author of the book "The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America."

He joined The Show to talk about this.
