A coalition of Latino education advocates this morning is calling for more Latino representation on three state education boards, the Arizona Board of Regents, the state Board of Education and the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools.

There are no current openings on any of those panels, although there are three members whose terms have expired — one on each of the boards; state law allows them to serve for up to a year after their term is up, so new appointments will be needed by January.

In addition, five members’ terms are set to expire in January. The Show spoke with Jose Leyba, a board member of the Arizona Latino Administrators and Superintendents Association, and asked him about the timing of calling on the governor to make these appointments — why now?
