Rosie Magaña, Cox Latina Entrepreneur of the Year

Arizona is a border state, and in 2014, the Pew Research Center found that more than 65 percent of Hispanic families here don’t speak English at home.

But there is only one Spanish-language bookstore in the entire state — Palabras Bilingual Bookstore, and it’s owned by Rosie Magaña.

Magaña, along with Sandra Flores, owner of Azukar Coffee in south Phoenix, has just been named the Cox Latina Entrepreneur of the Year by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

They are two examples of a fast-growing sector of Arizona businesses, according to the chamber. In fact, Latina-owned businesses in the U.S. are growing at a much faster rate than women-owned businesses in general. The sector grew 200 percent from 1997 to 2014.

So The Show went out to that one-and-only bilingual bookstore in Phoenix recently to meet Magaña to talk about how she got the idea to open the business to begin with.
