Closing The Gap For Mental Health Care In College Athletics

Mental health-related care can be a vital option for anyone attending a college or university. In some cases, the related challenges can be even more dramatic for student-athletes.

As of four years ago, according to ESPN, fewer than 25 Division I schools had a full-time licensed mental health practitioner in their athletic departments. That figure has improved, with 39 percent of Division I schools employing a staff member fitting that description. But a critical gap still remains.

To learn more, I’m joined by Dr. Amy Athey. She is the University of Arizona Athletic Department’s director of Clinical and Sports Psychology Services.
