In 2017, there have been more than 70 special elections for state and federal offices — many of them have turned into high-profile races in what was supposed to be an off-year, and each race has its own dynamics and candidates.

Is it possible to look at these special elections in the aggregate and take anything away that could be useful to think about heading into next year’s elections?

Here to talk about whether we learned anything about 2018 from the elections this year is Dave Levinthal, senior political reporter for the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, D.C.
