Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Captain Mark Kelly are no strangers to the gun debate in this country.

The two formed Americans for Responsible Solutions, a gun-control advocacy group, two years after Giffords was shot in the head during her informal “Congress on your Corner” constituency meet-and-greet in Tucson in 2011.

The move was in response to the 20 6- and 7-year olds, and their six teachers who were gunned down during the school day at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.

But now the organization has announced a major change, one they hope will draw more supporters to the group and focus attention on the courage it takes to go up against the gun lobby.

Later today, Giffords and Kelly are announcing that they’re starting a new chapter in their efforts to fight gun violence in the U.S., rebranding their nonprofit “Americans for Responsible Solutions” as just “Giffords.”

I spoke with Executive Director Peter Ambler earlier this morning about this and how long this change has been in the works.
