If you want to teach in Arizona, the state’s public universities and colleges say they’ll waive your tuition. Its part of a new state program hoping to make a dent in Arizona’s growing teacher shortage.

To participate in the program university students have to agree to work in an Arizona public school for the number of years they had tuition waived.

Gov. Doug Ducey announced the program and a few details about it Tuesday morning. He said the idea behind it came from the campaign trail in 2014, when candidate Fred Duval mentioned it during a debate.

"The fact is, no political party has a monopoly on good ideas," said Ducey. "Especially when it comes to education. This was Fred’s good idea. And it ignited this effort and brought us here today."

About 200 students are enrolled in the program this year, but officials hope to grow that number to 730 by 2022. As far as funding goes, it will be up to each university to find a way to fit the waivers into their yearly budgets.
