Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said this week that geographic and physical challenges will make it difficult to build the proposed border wall in the manner envisioned by President Donald Trump. He was speaking at a tele-press conference about new federal orders to bolster American energy independence, but the Associated Press asked Zinke about the wall.

The question was significant because just the day before, while speaking to the Public Lands Council, Zinke was quoted as saying, "what side of the river are you going to put the wall? We're not going to put it on our side and cede the river to Mexico. And we're probably not going to put it in the middle of the river."

The AP asked for clarity on that. Zinke responded and referenced Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly there.

To dig a little deeper into the geopolitical beehive of designing and building a border wall — and implying it might be built on the Mexican side — I’m joined by Reece Jones. He’s an associate professor of geography at the University of Hawai‘i, and the author of several books on borders.
