Protesters briefly stopped the light rail in Phoenix as they demonstrated against the detention of an undocumented immigrant.

Hundreds of protesters surrounded an ICE van holding Guadalupe Garcia de Rayos as she said a tearful goodbye to her son.

Garcia has been checking in with the ICE office here every year after pleading guilty to criminal impersonation charge in 2008. At previous check ins, she was released to await an appeal for deportation.

Puente Director Carlos Garcia said based on recent Federal actions, they thought this check-in might be different.

"This year, because of the new administration and the priorities, we assumed there would be issues and that’s what happened today - she was detained,” Garcia said the action will cause other undocumented immigrants to return to the shadows.

ICE said they were acting on a previous removal order. Garcia de Rayos’ location and fate are unknown.
