Affordable housing for female veterans and their families are scarce in the Valley and Tempe hopes to open a development to meet more of those needs.

Tempe is building an affordable housing development for female veterans and their families on 8th Street, east of Rural Road. In collaboration with the nonprofit Save the Family, the facility will provide space for 50 low-income families.

Save the Family will provide on-site resources including health care and job searching services. After school care and tutoring will be provided for the children.  A garden and playground area will also be built in the complex.

Vice Mayor Robin Arredondo-Savage said the the new facility is expected to open in fall of 2017 and was funded by the federal government, the county and Save the Family.

“It was really, truly a collaborative effort. We are really excited about the people that we will be able to help and the lives that we are going to be able to change,” said Arredondo-Savage.

Veterans can start applying for admission through Tempe or through Save the Family.
