Tuesday is the first day the state is taking applications for the KidsCare health care program. It provides insurance for children in low-income families. 

For a family of three, for example, earnings can be around $40,000 a year. Arizona’s Children’s Health Insurance Program had been frozen since 2010, making this the only state in the country without a State Children's Health Insurance Program.

State lawmakers voted this spring to unfreeze it, using federal money to pay for the expansion.

"We are seeing applications come in and we are seeing approvals," said Beth Kohler, deputy director of the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, which runs the state’s Medicaid and KidsCare programs.
