Phoenix’s music scene has struggled to reach its full potential over the years.

At one time, people said it could be the next Austin or Seattle, but as music venues closed and the scene became more spread out, it seemed to fracture. KJZZ’s Sarah Ventre was in Austin last week for the South by Southwest music festival and discovered an organization called How to Build a Music City.

Based in Columbus, Ohio, its goal is to build up the value of music in cities. Joey Hendrickson, the organization's founder, started the “Columbus Songwriters Association,” and started hearing from musicians. Those conversations got bigger and more organized, and How to Build a Music City came out of it.
