New apartments and condos keep popping up in downtown Phoenix in an attempt to continue to urbanize the area.

One place that could see even more change is Central Station, the transit center that received a makeover in 2011 thanks to nearly $4 million in federal stimulus money. Now, if the city has its way, one of the largest buildings in the state will soon rise there. Phoenix officials picked a Chicago-based firm to build a $72 million, 34-story apartment tower at the station.

But is the change too drastic for a city used to building out, not up? Phoenix Business Journal senior reporter Mike Sunnucks spoke about the project and its potential impact.
