'Patchwork' Of Laws Forms As Arizona Cities Approve Ordinances With No Statewide Laws

The Tempe City Council last week approved what’s being called one of the strictest distracted driving ordinances in the state with fines for first-time violators of $100.

Phoenix is among a few Arizona cities to ban texting while driving, but there is no statewide prohibition. That’s led to what critics are calling a “patchwork” of local laws, which can vary from city to city, as with Tempe and Phoenix.

Ken Strobeck, who is the executive director of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns, spoke about the issue.
