Why Nonprofit Health Insurers Are Saving Up Large Amounts Of Money

An analysis by Consumer Reports shows that many nonprofit health insurers across the country have stockpiled enormous amounts of money in case of unexpected events.

That’s not surprising or unreasonable, but some critics wonder whether the surpluses could be used to cut premiums or make other changes. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Arizona, for example, has set aside $1.03 billion.

Bruce McPherson, president of the Alliance for Advancing Non-Profit Healthcare, explained to us what the savings are for.
