The number of people in households in the United States has been on the decline pretty much since the country's founding.

In 1790, there were nearly six people in every household. In 2010, that number was down to an average of 2.5.

But this decade is expected to be the first where that longtime trend reverses. The Pew Research Center just released a report that shows an uptick in the number of people in American households in 2018.

Megan Costa is a sociologist and demographer at ASU who studies multigenerational families, and she believes that trend will only continue. The Show reached out to her to talk about the study and what might be behind its findings.
