Voter turnout for Arizona’s primary elections is extremely low. Some argue that’s because the results of so many congressional and legislative races are a foregone conclusion.

Others say the date is just too inconvenient, coming in the last week of August, when the brutal summer is still beating us down.

State Rep. T.J. Shope of Coolidge would like the primary to be as early as May. He’s the sponsor of House Bill 2138.

Political strategists are keeping a close eye on whether lawmakers vote to change the primary election date.
