Parts of the Valley have gotten a real soaking this week. When it rains, it is Tim Phillips’ job to make sure all that water passes safely through the Valley. He is the chief engineer and general manager of the Flood Control District of Maricopa County and said the water goes where it is has always gone, through county’s river systems, before draining out towards the Colorado River.

So all that rain this week might be good for our plants, and the clouds help keep the temperatures from reaching those of the surface of the sun, but man, have you been outside in the evening recently? You get eaten alive out there.

This week, Sprouts Farmers Market announced it is going public. Sprouts is one of many, many grocery options in the Valley. Tim James, professor of economics at the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University said the Phoenix market city, not grocery, is in some ways unique.

At a place 15 minutes from downtown Phoenix, a wetland restoration effort has been in the works for more than a decade.

Flags around Arizona will go back up to full staff at sunset Friday evening. Governor Brewer had ordered them to be at half-staff for 19 days, in memory of the 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew who died fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire.
